by lexa toledo villanueva
Drawing from her recent travels to Cavite, Philippines, this original mixed media composition by lexa toledo villanueva weaves together multiple techniques imbued thematically with elements of belonging, cultural specificity and home. Archival watercolor paper was painted, then cut and carefully woven into a vibrant, layered landscape evoking the artist’s family's homeland; the intricacy of the weaving mirrors her own multifaceted, multicultural identity. lexa's young daughter Isadora aided in painting the paper before it was cut into strips and shapes for weaving and collage, and her partner Matias Bervejillo fabricated the wooden frame from the artist’s sketches.
