Dominic Cretara | Portals
By Debra J. Byrne, Frye Curator of Exhibitions
Designed by Cathy Blackburn
Edited by Richard V. West
This catalogue is published by the Frye Art Museum in conjunction with its exhibition Dominic Cretara: Portals (May 11–July 8, 2001).
The three series of paintings represented in this exhibition, Portals, Family, and Outsiders, coalesce to create a self-portrait of the artist. Cretara moves beyond the concept of resemblance to address the power behind portraiture, a look into the ethereal nature of the portrayed. Cretara’s portals represent his personality through introspective reflections of community, family, memory, and fantasy.
This publication includes an artist’s statement, 14 color illustrations of paintings from the exhibit along with an exhibition checklist, and artist biography.
