Introduction by Richard V. West

Essay by Scott J. Tanner

This catalogue was published by the Frye Art Museum in conjunction with its exhibition Winold Reiss: Native American Portraits (July 21–September 10, 2000). This survey of Native American portraits is the second in an occasional series of exhibitions entitled Another Look, mounted by the Frye Art Museum. The purpose is to introduce a new generation of art lovers to artists, once active in the Northwest, whose achievements have been obscured by time and circumstance.

Reiss’s quest to capture the images of Native Americans was a continuation of a tradition begun in the nineteenth century of artists chronicling the appearance and customs of America’s native peoples. Although sponsored by the Great Northern Railway, Reiss sought to capture the character and spirit of his subject as a unique individual.

This publication includes an introduction by Richard V. West, an essay by Scott. J. Tanner, full color illustrations of the exhibition artworks along with an exhibition checklist and selected bibliography.
